Description

An original oil painting depicting a re-telling of the infamous Greek legend of Persephone and Hades.

The Legend behind the Artwork:

In Ancient Greek, Hades, god of the underworld, abducted Persephone to be his queen, and her mother Demeter caused the earth to wither in grief. Before Persephone was returned, she ate six pomegranate seeds, binding her to spend six months each year in the underworld. This explains the seasons: the earth flourishes when Persephone is with Demeter and becomes barren during the months she stays with Hades. In the print Hades is represented by the national animal of Cyprus; the mouflon.

As a British-Cypriot artist, the painting also explores my cultural identity. I utilised the symbolism of pomegranates, mouflons and cats to subvert and contrast the robins and show the conflict that a dual cultural identity causes for second generation immigrants.
